The 29th April 2011 has without doubt gone down in the
history as one of the most anticipated and wanted weddings
within the British monarchy. Most people up and down the
country eagerly awaited the time when Prince
William and Kate Middleton would announce their engagement.
With his late mothers engagement ring securely placed on
Kate's finger the happy couple seemed to be genuinely looking
forward to their big day, a day that they shared
with the rest of the country if not the world.
Their special day threw up a number of
markers to think about, the first we know about is the fact
that is also St Catherine's Day. This refers back to St
Catherine of Siena T.O.S.D (25 March 1347 – 29 April 1380)
was a tertiary of the Dominican Order, and a Scholastic
philosopher and theologian. She also worked to bring the
Papacy back to Rome from its displacement in France, and to
establish peace among the Italian city-states. She was
proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970. She is one of the
two patron saints of Italy, together with Francis of Assisi
(source from Wikipedia).
The second and maybe the more important is the fact it may
well have been your wedding day, as over a thousand couples
also settled on this special date. Many couples had
reservations about it clashing with the royal bash and
taking the shine off their big day, but many couples made it
work for them. With the Prime
Minister announcing that it was to become an extra Bank
Holiday everyone, this meat all of your guests would be
able to attend your special day and not to have to rush home from
work to get ready for the evenings festivities. They could
party with you and still have a full Bank Holiday weekend
ahead of them to either carry painting the town red or spend
recovering. There was a larger range of wedding present
ideas available to choose from due to the royal wedding as
the whole country slipped into wedding mode and if your
initials just happen to have been W & K - "Bingo" you
were bound to
be given your own range of monogrammed memorabilia
commemorating this special date.

After the fundamental influences generated by
what was meant to be a "low key" Royal Wedding, this and
future years is going to see a return to the
trend of a more traditional wedding, with even more churches
being used than ever before. The trend and styling for the
menswear is going to see more of a formal and military look
with embroidered jackets, braiding and piping.
The £16 dress by Tesco in the style of the one
Kate Middleton wore to announce her Royal engagement sold out all over the country and the internet
was
awash with replica engagement rings.
